The Different Types of Veterinary Technician Programs
There are many different types of veterinary technician programs available, and each has its own requirements. However, most programs will require you to have a high school diploma or equivalent, and some may require you to have completed some college coursework. The type of program you choose will also determine the amount of time it takes to complete the program.
Associate’s Degree in Veterinary Technology
An Associate’s Degree in Veterinary Technology is the most common type of degree held by veterinary technicians. This degree can be completed in two years at a community college, and it will prepare you to sit for the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE). Once you pass the VTNE, you will be a credentialed veterinary technician and can begin working in a veterinary practice.
Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Technology
A Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Technology is a four-year degree that trains students in all aspects of animal care. This degree is the most common path to becoming a registered veterinary technician, and it is also the route to becoming a certified veterinary technologist.
Master’s Degree in Veterinary Technology
A more advanced degree, such as a Master’s Degree in Veterinary Technology, may be required for some positions in veterinary technology. This type of degree is typically only available through a few institutions, and it is important to check with the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) to ensure that the program you are considering is properly accredited. The Different Types of Veterinary Technician Exams
There are multiple types of veterinary technician exams that focus on different aspects of the job. The American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) offers the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE), which is the most common exam taken by vet techs. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) also offers the Veterinary Technician Clinical Proficiency Exam (VTCPE), which is designed for those who have already completed a veterinary technician program.
The Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE)
The Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) is a standardized exam that all aspiring veterinary technicians must take in order to become credentialed. The VTNE is administered by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB).
The Veterinary Technician State Exam (VTSE)
The Veterinary Technician State Exam (VTSE) is usually the first step in the process of becoming licensed as a veterinary technician. The VTSE is a computer-based, multiple-choice exam that covers all aspects of veterinary technology. The exam is administered by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) and is offered year-round at testing centers around the country. There is no passing score for the VTSE, but you must achieve a score of 70% or higher to receive certification.
The VTSE is divided into two sections: the General section and the Clinical section. The General section covers topics such as veterinary anatomy and physiology, animal husbandry, pharmacology, and public health. The Clinical section tests your knowledge of clinical procedures and medical terminology. You will have four hours to complete both sections of the exam.
After you pass the VTSE, you will need to complete a state-approved veterinary technician program before you can be licensed in most states. Some states may also require you to take a practical exam or an additional written exam.
The Different Types of Veterinary Technician Certification
There are many different types of veterinary technician certification, but not all of them are required in order to work as a vet tech. The most common type of certification is the Veterinary Technician National Exam, which is required in order to work in most states. There are also voluntary certification programs offered by various organizations, such as the American Veterinary Medical Association.
The Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT)
The Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) is the most highly credentialed veterinary technician. A CVT has completed a minimum of a 2-year accredited veterinary technology program and has passed a credentialing exam administered by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB).

The Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)
In order to become credentialed as a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), candidates must first pass the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE). The VTNE is a computer-based, five-part examination created by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB). Upon passing the VTNE, candidates must then apply to the state in which they wish to practice for licensure and certification.
There are currently only 24 states that require veterinary technicians to be credentialed in order to practice. Although licensure is not currently required in all states, many employers prefer or require RVTs on their team. The RVT credential is also portable, meaning that if you move to another state that requires licensure, you will only need to submit an application and fee to the new state’s veterinary board in order to obtain your new license.

The Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT)
In order to sit for the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE), most states require that you complete a veterinary technology program at an accredited school and then earn a passing score on the exam. Once you have met these requirements, you will be eligible to apply for state licensure as a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT).
