Radiology techs are medical professionals who use diagnostic imaging equipment to help physicians diagnose and treat injuries and diseases. They operate X-ray, MRI, and CT scanners, as well as other types of medical equipment. Now that we have a better understanding of the job, let’s talk about the prerequisites.
High school diploma or equivalent
A high school diploma or equivalent is the minimum educational requirement for most radiologic technologists and technicians. Some employers prefer candidates who have completed a formal radiology training program at a community college, hospital, vocational school, or 4-year college. Most States and the District of Columbia regulate the practice of radiologic technology and set specific requirements for licensure. Many States require licensure for all technologists who perform diagnostic imaging examinations, regardless of the modality. However, some States exempt bone densitometry technologists from licensure requirements. A few States exempt technologists who perform only radiographic examinations or those employed in settings such as physicians’ offices. Specific State requirements vary, so it is advisable to check with the primary regulatory agency in the State where you plan to work. Certification

ARRT certification in radiography
ARRT certification in radiography is required for diagnostic radiology technologists who wish to be licensed in most states. Certification is not required for those who wish to work in computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or mammography, but many employers prefer it. Certification is valid for four years and can be renewed by completing continuing education courses and passing an exam.
State licensure
State licensure is required to practice Radiology Technology in the United States. Each state regulates Radiology Technologists in order to ensure the safety of the public. Specific requirements may vary by state, but most require successful completion of an accredited Radiologic Technology program and passage of a national examination. Many states also require continuing education credits (CEUs) to maintain licensure. Once licensed, Radiology Technologists must renew their license periodically, usually every two years.
Clinical Experience
Most radiology tech programs will require that you have some kind of clinical experience before you can apply. This can be in the form of an internship, volunteering, or working in a related field. This experience will help you to understand the basics of the radiology tech field and see if it is the right fit for you.
Completion of a clinical internship
In order to become a radiology tech, you must first complete a clinical internship. This is typically a one-year program that will give you the opportunity to work in a real-world setting and gain the hands-on experience you need to be successful in this career.
After completing your clinical internship, you will then need to pass the certification exam administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Once you have passed this exam, you will be a certified radiology tech and will be able to begin working in your chosen career.
Other Qualifications
Beyond the standard high school diploma or GED, there are no specific prerequisites for becoming a radiologic technologist. However, most candidates wishing to enter the field have at least some college experience. Those with a two-year associate degree or higher in radiologic technology from an accredited program will have the best job prospects.
Good communication skills
While technical skills are important for anyone in the medical field, they are not the only skills that are necessary. Good communication skills are also a must. Radiology techs need to be able to explain the procedures to patients who may be nervous or anxious. They also need to be able to take direction from doctors and nurses.
Critical thinking skills
Radiology technicians must be able to think critically and solve problems quickly. They must be able to understand and follow complex instructions, as well as have strong communication and interpersonal skills. They must also be able to maintain a high level of concentration for long periods of time.
Physical stamina
Becoming a radiology tech requires more than just the ability to pass an academic program and obtain state licensure. There are also certain physical prerequisites that candidates must be able to meet in order to work in this field.
For starters, radiology techs must be able to lift at least 50 pounds on a regular basis. They also need to have good stamina and be able to stand for long periods of time, as they will often be required to do so while performing certain procedures. Additionally, because they will be working with patients who may be ill or in pain, radiology techs need to have good emotional stamina and be able to remain calm in difficult situations.
