In 1871, Camiguin was made into a province of the newly created Department of Mindanao and Sulu.
During the Philippine-American War, Camiguin was occupied by American forces in 1899. In 1901, it became part of the Moro Province, which consisted of Mindanao, Sulu and Palawan. In 1903, the province was divided into two parts: the northern section became Lanao Province while the southern portion remained as Moro Province. Camiguin remained part of Lanao until 1914 when it was transferred to Misamis Occidental Province.
In 1942, Japanese forces invaded and occupied Camiguin during World War II. After the war, Camiguin became part of Misamis Oriental Province when it was created in 1948. In 1966, Misamis Oriental and Misamis Occidental were merged to form one province called Misamis Occidental-Oriental Provinces (later renamed Zamboanga del Norte). Finally, in 1973 camiguin became an independent province once again .
